John’s career has been built on forming passionate, goal driven teams who can create extraordinary results. Nothing gives him greater pleasure than to see groups of different personality and skill types come together to achieve results exponentially greater than any one individual contributor can. His most proud accomplishments over the past 20 years revolve around building cultures of excellence in which all team members are excited to come to work everyday to make a difference.
John’s leadership experience has spanned building a team of sales, marketing and business development professionals for Google’s Technology Vertical segment, to Publishing and President roles at major technology publications and online websites at IDG and Miller Freeman/CMP, serving the business and consumer technology markets. In addition, John has a depth of experience in online start-up business planning from his days at Hypermedia Communication and Zulusports.com, where he was responsible for building revenue models and raising capital from the VC community. The common thread through all these experiences has been the building and executing of cohesive business plans made successful by creating a culture of individual and team excellence.
At Miller Freeman Inc., John was promoted six times in seven years to become Publisher of one of the company’s largest publication, online and event franchises, Network Magazine. Under his leadership the magazine was awarded best-redesigned publication from the ABA association.
During the down market of 2001 and 2002, John “rebooted” West Coast sales strategy’s at IDG’s Computerworld online and offline brand resulting in a doubling of market share over a 1 year period
At Google, John was awarded a “luminary” distinction in 2003, identifying him within the top 5% of leaders throughout the organization. During the 2004-2007 periods, John’s vertical team received the highest marks out of 12 vertical teams for team satisfaction and grew revenue from the ground floor to over $200 million.
While at Google, John was a featured speaker at over 30 industry events, with audiences as large as 700 people. At the Baptie BtoB conferences in 2003 and 2005 he was recognized with a “Best Speaker” award out of a field of 50 presenters.
Over the past year, John has been using his real world business experience to help start up and new emerging companies build cohesive business strategies and accountable teams structured around success.
